Shallow Water Multibeam Applications- SONIC2024

Swathe Services provided additional specialist multibeam personnel and equipment to work as part of the team for one
of the larger UK survey companies carrying out bathymetric surveys off the coast of Scotland.

Our surveyors brought multibeam expertise to our client's team using an R2Sonic SONIC2024 wideband multibeam echosounder, to undertake a 3km×0.5km high resolution bathymetry survey, ranging from the coast to depths of 60m.

To prevent interference with a 200kHz sidescan sonar that was being towed simultaneously, a frequency of 320kHz was selected from the 200–400kHz variable frequency range available in the Sonic2024.

The wideband multibeam sounder with 256 beam resolution, provided the ideal solution and the 130° sector coverage gave a maximum swathe width of over 150m in the deepest area. Swathe sector rotation, which can be changed online, was used in the near-shore section to angle the swathe at 70° to the vertical. This permitted coverage to within a few metres of the surface whilst the survey vessel remained in a comfortable 5m of water.

The SONIC2024 was mounted on an over-the-side pole along with a Valeport miniSVS and TSS DMS 05 motion reference unit to provide real-time velocity and motion compensation. An SG Brown Meridian gyro compass was used to determine accurate heading, and position was obtained from a Leica GPS receiving RTK corrections from a local base station. Backup position and heading were provided by a Hemisphere VS110 vector DGPS receiver. Data acquisition and processing were undertaken in QPS QINSy and Qloud packages and a preliminary seabed image was provided to the client on site. The final processed image and 1m DTM was delivered to the client within 5 days.
